Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Are you cooking this year? Traveling? Running a turkey trot? Sarah, her man and her peanut are heading to our mother’s. My guys and I will be in Salem with my huz’ extended family. Many might look forward to the food, but I am amped for the annual post-feast Just Dance battle between the teens and me. Isaac loves music and dancing and is almost never allowed in front of the television so he is sure to go bonkers in the best possible way when he gets to groove with Mama and the cousins to classics from Britney and Shakira.
I am going to stop apologizing for being the most sporadic blogger in the herstory of blogging – I am what I am, a busy lady with a vast array of interests and projects and distractions. Torn between seeking paid work, and writing, which feels like working for free, even if it is a means to paid work, I generally spend my time on the former. You can keep up with my personal and professional life in photos over on insta, if that’s your thing.
This site is supposed to be a collection of thoughts and inspiration around the realities of family, specifically mamahood, nourishing the belly and the soul, and living lighter on the earth’s surface. We will continue to strive to ensure Lilac & Chive is true to those goals, promise. Right now though, the results of, and continuing alarming fallout from, this month’s election have Sarah and me pretty shaken. We still seek beauty and peace in the everyday, whilst attempting to channel our deep sorrow, anger, and fear into constructive community action. I could write a long-format piece about my shaken faith in America as a nation and as a people, but that would mostly just be self-serving.
We will get back to recipes and wine and books (I am almost done The Goldfinch!) and mamahood. But this is urgent. Love is love. Black lives matter. Immigrants make America great. All religious are welcome here. Climate change is real. Women’s rights are human rights. I know all this to be as true as the sunrise. If you do not see these truths in your life, please, let’s grab a coffee and share the life experiences that brought us here, and seek to understand each other’s beliefs.
For now, revel in holiday cheer, and deliciousness, and family warmth, and feel thankful, but please, do not become complacent, and do not let me become complacent either, the state of our union, and the future of our children, are counting on us.
Wishing you all light and love and laughter.
